Nepal: Authorities impose curfew and gathering restrictions in parts of Mahottari District in response to Oct. 27 communal violence

Curfew and public gathering restrictions imposed in parts of Mahotari District, Nepal, following Oct. 27 communal clashes.

Warning

Event

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in parts of Mahottari District, Madhesh Province, through at least early November after communal clashes during a religious procession left dozens of civilians and police injured in Bhangaha municipality on Oct. 27. Officials have imposed an indefinite curfew and public gathering restrictions in response to the recent violence; the measures primarily affect Bhangaha, Dharmapur, Loharpatti, and Parariya. Persons engaged in providing essential services are exempt from the restrictions.

Security personnel have deployed in the affected areas and may implement additional measures in other parts of the district as a precaution or if tensions persist. Further communal violence and clashes with police are possible. Businesses will likely close early to accommodate the curfew.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in affected areas of Mahottari District. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel. Confirm road status before traveling to locations under curfew or movement restrictions. If any violence erupts nearby, depart the area immediately.
