The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) has warned it will implement prolonged load shedding nationwide Oct. 30. The reason for the outage is a reduction is supply to allow for power plant maintenance in Nkula 07:00-17:00 Oct. 30. The load shedding schedule runs as follows:
Customer group A: 04:00-18:00
Customer group B: 06:00-20:00
Customer group C: 06:00-20:00
Customer group D: 06:00-23:00
Customer group E: 06:00-23:00
Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are possible during the outage; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
