Ongoing protests targeting foreign-owned business in Kasungu, Central Region, Malawi, Oct. 28. Increased security likely, violence possible.

An anti-foreigner protest is reportedly ongoing in Kasungu, Central Region, Oct. 28. Businesses closures have occurred due to the protest. This follows reports that one of the suspects connected to a bank robbery and murder of a security guard overnight Oct. 26-27 may be a foreign national, possibly Burundian. Kasungu is located approximately 130 kilometers (81 miles) northwest of Lilongwe.

Although here have been no confirmed reports of violence thus far, the situation could turn violent should protestors resort to attacking foreign-owned businesses. Security personnel will likely deploy to monitor the protests. Clashes between police forces and protesters are possible if participants ignore orders to disperse. The protest action could result in ground travel disruptions, including on the M1 highway which runs through the town.

Avoid all protests. Plan for road travel delays. Heed instructions from security forces. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building.
