Emergency crews responding to vegetation fire on Pegasus Beach in Canterbury Region, New Zealand, as of late Nov, 2. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews continue to respond to a large vegetation fire burning on Pegasus Beach in Canterbury Region, around 25 km (16 miles) north of Christchurch, as of late Nov. 2. Firefighters have been on the scene since around 19:30 Nov. 2 and the fire is spreading quickly southwards towards Woodend Beach. Authorities evacuated around 130 people from Woodend Beach Holiday Park to Woodend Community Center as the park is in the direct path of the fire. More than 50 personnel are on-site battling the blaze and heavy machinery is being deployed to establish fire breaks. Strong winds have fanned the fire and further wildfire growth is possible in the coming hours and days.

Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes in the vicinity of the fire and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
