Spain: Spanish union staging nationwide rail strike Nov. 11 /update 1

Spanish union staging nationwide rail strike Nov. 11; disruptions to services likely.

Informational

Event

Railway workers associated with the SFF-CGT union are staging the second of two 00:01-23:00 strikes Nov. 11, to demand better pay and working conditions. The strikes target Renfe operated services nationwide. Related protests are possible in town and city centers.

The impact of the action is limited due to the lack of participation of major unions and minimum levels of service guaranteed by the Ministry of Transport. Nonetheless, disruptions to Renfe services are likely. Renfe estimates that:

  • on the Cercanias commuter networks 75 percent of services will operate during rush hours and 50 percent of services the rest of the day,

  • 65 percent of services on medium-distance and Avant services,

  • 72 percent of services on high-speed and long-distance services, and

  • 25 percent of freight services.

Services that do operate are likely to be busier than normal and increased congestion is likely on alternative forms of transport. The first of the two strikes took place on Nov. 7.

Advice

Confirm rail schedules before travel and allow extra time for journeys Nov. 11. Consider alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Anticipate possible disruptions if routing freight via rail in Spain and consider alternative options for critical shipments. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution.
