New Caledonia: Public sector employees to strike territorywide Nov. 17

Public sector workers to strike in New Caledonia Nov. 17. Increased security likely; localized transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Public sector employees affiliated with the New Caledonia Territorial Chapter of the CFE-CGC plan to stage a territory-wide strike Nov. 17. The purpose of the work stoppage is to demand the local government increase employee wages. Authorities anticipate that, unless averted, the labor action will have the greatest impact on the public school system.

As a part of the strike, workers intend to gather near the ferry terminal in Noumea, as well as in undisclosed locations in the North and Loyalty Islands provinces beginning at 08:00. It remains unclear how many participants the demonstrations may draw. Security personnel will likely monitor any gatherings that may materialize. Localized transport disruptions are possible.

Advice

Confirm availability of public services and all appointments with government offices for Nov. 19. Exercise caution near any demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations, especially in central Noumea. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
