Transport workers to strike across Lima and Callao, Peru, Nov. 22. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several labor unions that represent workers in the heavy cargo and public transportation sectors announced that they will stage a 24-hour strike in Lima and Callao Nov. 22. The unions say that they estimate that 16,000 vehicles will be taken out of service as part of the strike, and the action is likely to affect transport in the capital area significantly.

As part of the strike, workers may use trucks and buses to block roads. Police are likely to deploy to any such roadblocks, and clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators and reopen roads.

Advice

Allow for additional transport time across Lima and Callao Nov. 22. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them instead. If violence occurs, immediately seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
