New Caledonia: Unionized civil servants plan territorywide strike and related demonstrations Nov. 28
Civil servants to hold strike, protests in New Caledonia Nov. 28. Increased security likely; localized transport disruptions possible.
Event
Unions representing civil servants plan to stage a strike across New Caledonia and related demonstrations Nov. 28 to demand increased wages. Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely disrupt public service operations.
As a part of the labor action, participants intend to gather near government buildings in Noumea, provincial assembly buildings in Kone and Lifou, and various town halls in Mare, Ouvea, and Poindimie. Organizers will also gather at a heretofore undisclosed location in La Foa, South Province. Additional demonstrations are possible near other prominent government buildings and public squares, as well as along major thoroughfares. Larger gatherings have previously attracted hundreds of participants, especially in Noumea.
Security personnel will likely monitor any gatherings that materialize. Isolated skirmishes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible.
Advice
Confirm availability of public services and all appointments with public offices for Nov. 28. Exercise caution near any demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations, especially in central Noumea. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
