Unionized workers in multiple sectors to stage general strike across Italy, Dec. 1-2. Likely travel delays and disruption, protests.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers in multiple sectors will stage general strikes nationwide Dec. 1 and 2 to demand increased pay. Some unions have added extra demands, including denouncing the cost of living and calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The public transport, air travel, health, education, manufacturing, and highway worker sectors will be impacted.

  • Trains: Railway workers will strike from 21:00 Dec. 1 for 24 hours. National trains (TrenItalia) will operate some services from 09:00-17:00 Dec. 2. Regional train operators (including Trenord) will guarantee services at peak times (06:00-09:00, 18:00-21:00).

  • Local public transport: Metro, tram, and bus services will be reduced or canceled in towns and cities across the country, 00:01-23:59 Dec. 2, including in Rome, Milan, Naples, and Bologna.

  • Main Roads: Highway workers, including toll operators, will strike from 22:00 Dec. 1 for 24 hours.

  • Maritime: Maritime sector workers will strike 00:01-23:59 Dec. 2.

  • Air Travel: Air sector workers will strike 00:01-23:59 Dec. 2. This is in addition to Vueling airline employees in Italy, who will strike at the same time, protesting against redundancies and in support of improved working conditions.

Unions are planning demonstrations in major cities. Likely attendance is not known. Protests are likely to take place at major transport hubs, in front of government buildings, and in central squares and parks. The largest demonstration is likely to be in Rome, where protestors will gather in Piazza Della Repubblica from 10:30.

The general strike will cause widespread national disruptions to travel and business. The transport sector will be severely affected at the international, national, regional, and local levels. Other businesses will be directly impacted by industrial action. The strike by highway workers will likely cause delays at motorway toll booths. Protests, and associated heightened security and possible road closures, will cause further localized disruptions.
