Malawi: Civil society organization to protest in Lilongwe, Nov. 30
Civil society organization to protest in Lilongwe, Malawi, Nov. 30. Heightened security, likely transport disruptions, possible violence.
Event
The civil society movement "Concerned Malawi Citizens" will protest in Lilongwe from 09:00 Nov. 30. The protest, dubbed "chilungamo chioneke" or "let justice be seen," aims at delivering a petition to Parliament demanding further investigation into the death of a prominent local businessman, Oct. 17. Protestors believe the victim did not die in a road accident but was murdered. The District Commissioner has given his approval for a march starting at Kamuzu Central Hospital, through Kenyatta Drive, and ending at Parliament.
Police will likely deploy to monitor the march. Clashes between police forces and protesters are possible should participants stray from the agreed route or ignore orders to disperse. The protest action and security personnel response, which could include road closures, will likely result in ground travel and business operation disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Plan for road travel delays and reconfirm the status of routes before departure. Heed instructions from security forces. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building.
