Warning

Event

Various activists are staging protests and a shutdown strike in Gwadar, Balochistan Province, as of Dec. 5. Activists affiliated with the Haq Do Tehreek movement are holding demonstrations to oppose several construction projects due to perceived environmental concerns, among other things. In recent days, demonstrators have staged sit-in protests at various locations, including Gwadar International Airport (GWD), Gwadar East Bay Expressway, and Lala Hameed Chowk, as well as a cantonment site under construction. Further protests of varying sizes and types are likely over the coming days. Potential gathering sites include Gwadar Port, construction sites, government buildings, press clubs, markets, and/or public squares.

Additionally, local traders associated with Anjuman-e-Tajran have commenced an indefinite shutdown strike to demand greater government action against rising incidents of theft and alleged inadequate police response. As of Dec. 5, reports indicate the work stoppage is impacting the city's local markets and financial institutions.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse those that become overly disruptive. Enhanced security measures, such as roadblocks or temporary restrictions on public movement and internet services, cannot be ruled out. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Further localized business disruptions are possible due to potential shipping delays, especially if protesters persistently gather near Gwadar Port.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Plan for localized business and transport disruptions, especially near Gwadar East Bay Expressway. Do not route shipments through affected terminals without verifying onward transport. Use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freight. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
