Qatar: Showers and decreasing temperatures forecast across the country through at least Dec. 14

Deteriorating weather conditions forecast across Qatar through at least Dec. 14. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Showers and colder temperatures are forecast across Qatar through at least Dec. 14. The Qatar Meteorology Department has issued a bulletin warning of scattered rain and decreasing temperatures over the coming days. Rainfall of varying intensity is forecast across Qatar Dec. 7-10. Showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms as well as winds gusting up to 46 kph (29 mph). From Dec. 10 through at least Dec. 14 northwesterly winds will bring a drop in temperatures across Qatar, especially during the night and early morning hours. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 19-26 C (66-79 F) and minimum temperatures between 15-24 C (59-75 F), with cooler temperatures possible in southern and coastal areas. The deteriorating weather coincides with the start of the Al-Marb'aannyeh winter season in Qatar, which lasts around 40 days.

Periods of sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible if significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Due to the arid nature of the region and poor stormwater management in some urban areas, even minor rainfall accumulations could quickly result in episodes of flash flooding. Flooding is possible in streams and wadis (dry riverbeds). Significant rainfall may be preceded by moderate winds and dust storms, though some areas - particularly desert areas - may experience high levels of dust without rain.

The adverse weather may contribute to transport disruptions throughout Qatar. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays at airports.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
