Qatar: Heightened security likely in Al Khor and Doha as a precaution for crowd management during Morocco vs. France match Dec. 14

Authorities in Doha will likely maintain very tight security around Al Bayt Stadium, Souq Waqif, fan zones, and other popular gathering places in the Qatari capital ahead and after the FIFA World Cup semifinal match between Morocco and France, scheduled to kick off at 22:00 Dec. 14. The historic Moroccan qualification on Dec. 6 led to large celebratory gatherings in Doha.

On Dec. 13, the Moroccan Football Federation organized the distribution of 13,000 free tickets to the semifinal match. Royal Air Maroc announced plans to operate 30 additional flights to Qatar to accommodate fans. However, following restrictions by Qatari authorities, the airline had to cancel seven flights, frustrating over 2,000 Moroccan supporters.

Al Bayt Stadium has a capacity of over 68,000 seats. During previous matches, incidents of fans without valid tickets arriving at the stadium have caused significant delays and crowd management issues in Doha. Similar incidents will likely occur on Dec. 14, creating crowd management challenges.

Large celebratory gatherings and demonstrations are likely following the match. Qatari authorities will likely be quick to respond to any confrontations or other security incidents that may occur. Localized transport disruptions due to road closures and other security measures are possible.

Exercise increased situational awareness in Doha into at least the early morning hours of Dec. 15, particularly in the vicinity of Al Bayt Stadium and other venues where fans may hold post-match gatherings. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel; respect local customs and avoid sensitive topics of conversation.
