India: Truck drivers to strike and stage protests in Madhya Pradesh State Dec. 16

Truck drivers to strike and hold protests in Madhya Pradesh State, India, Dec. 16. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Truck drivers affiliated with the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) will commence a work stoppage and hold protests in Madhya Pradesh State Dec. 16 to denounce an alleged increase in the harassment of truck drivers and owners at interstate checkpoints. Unless averted, the labor action will likely impact the delivery of various goods. Organizers may call off the strike on short notice if negotiations with officials are successful.

As a part of their action, strike participants plan to surround (gherao) the chief minister's residence and will reportedly stage a sit-in demonstration at Ambedkar Maidan in Bhopal. Additional gatherings are possible near government buildings, public squares, and major roadways, especially in Bhopal. Protesters may block roadways with vehicles as well as march along them, causing localized transport disruptions. Authorities will likely monitor any protests that materialize and may try to disperse gatherings that are particularly disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Localized business disruptions may occur.

Advice

Confirm goods delivery services during the labor action period and seek alternative transport if necessary. Avoid protests and navigating roadblocks due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
