An explosion and resultiing fire along Ali Hospital Road near Umar Farooq Chowk in the Khuzdar District of Balochistan Province left at least 13 people wounded late Dec. 19. While investigations into the cause of the blast are still ongoing, local law enforcement officials believe the incident may have been the result of an improvised explosive device (IED) mounted on a motorcycle. The number of casualties may rise over the coming hours. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

Security forces are have established checkpoints in some areas of the district in an effort to apprehend potential perpetrators. Officials plan to increase security near the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) Highway through at least the morning of Dec. 20.

Khuzdar District is approximately 264 km (164 miles) south of Quetta.

Avoid the scene of the blast until authorities have completed their investigation and given the all-clear. Strictly heed the instructions of local security force personnel.
