Liberia: Opposition party to protest at Capitol Hill, Monrovia, Dec. 21

The opposition Liberian People's Party (LPP) has called for a protest at the Capitol Building in Monrovia's Capitol Hill area Dec. 21 to denounce the constitutional crisis and demand free and fair elections, among other issues. Organizers have not announced a specific start time. The Capitol Hill area also hosts several other government buildings, such as the Executive Mansion; the rally could spread to affect other facilities. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw.

It is unclear whether permission has been granted for the event. Should the protest proceed, a heightened security presence is likely across Capitol Hill. Traffic disruptions are likely along Camp Johnson Road, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Tubman Boulevard. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.
