Kenya: National rail service provider temporarily suspends some commuter services in Nairobi area until Jan. 3

Some commuter rail services in greater Nairobi area, Kenya, suspended until Jan. 3 due to low ridership.

Warning

Event

Kenya Railways Corporation (KR) has temporarily suspended service on several commuter rail lines in the greater Nairobi area until Jan. 3. The move comes in response to low ridership during the holiday season, with the suspension entering into effect on Dec. 22. The measure affects lines serving Ruiru, Syokimau, Lukenya, and Embakasi Village; bus connections to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) are typically available from the Embakasi Village station.

The suspension will disrupt rail operations at the following specific stations and stops:

  • Nairobi to/from Ruiru: Makadara, Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa West;

  • Nairobi to/from Lukenya: Makadara, Imara Daima, Embakasi, Mlolongo, Athi River, Kitengela;

  • Nairobi to/from Embakasi Village: Makadara, Donholm, Pipeline;

  • Nairobi to/from Syokimau: Makadara, Imara Daima, and Nairobi Terminus.

Rail service connecting Nairobi Central Station and the Nairobi SGR terminal will operate normally.

Increased automobile traffic congestion is possible in Nairobi until normal rail services resume as individuals who would normally ride the train resort to the use of their privately owned vehicle.

Advice

Consider alternative modes of transportation to reach destinations along affected commuter rail lines, including NBO, until Jan. 3. Allow extra time for travel. Reconfirm the status of rail services before departure.
