South Korea: Authorities responding to major tunnel fire in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, the afternoon of Dec. 29

Emergency crews are responding to a fire in a noise-barrier tunnel on the second Gyeongin Expressway in Galhyeon District, Gwacheon City, Gyeonggi Province, Dec. 29. The expressway connects Incheon and Seongnam cities. The blaze reportedly started at around 13:49 inside the tunnel following an accident between a bus and a truck. Reports indicate at least six fatalities and up to 20 injuries; the casualty count could rise in the coming hours. Authorities have deployed around 50 fire trucks, 140 fire personnel, and helicopters to the scene.

Emergency personnel will probably remain in the area until they extinguish the blaze and complete an investigation into the incident. Road closures and traffic disruptions are ongoing along the expressway. Lingering localized transport disruptions are likely until crews clear the site and complete repairs

The incident site is approximately 3 km (2 miles) south of Seoul.
