Climate activists continue protest in Lutzerath, Germany, Jan. 18. Heightened security reported; transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Climate activists are continuing protests in Lutzerath, North Rhine-Westphalia, as of Jan. 18. The purpose of the action is to denounce plans to expand a coal mine in the area and prevent the demolition of Lutzerath village. A major demonstration took place in Lutzerath Jan. 14, when the presence and arrest of the campaigner Greta Thunburg further raised the profile of the protest. Activists are likely to attempt to remain at the protest site for as long as possible, and some remain in tunnels under the site.

In related actions in North Rhine-Westphalia region in recent days, activists have occupied machinery at a lignite mine in Inden, and blocked a rail track leading to the Neurath coal-fired power station near Rommerskirchen. In a combined action with the Last Generation movement, protesters blocked main roads in Cologne Jan. 17. Further protests are likely in the North Rhine-Westphalia region and in other major German centers.

Additional police are deployed to monitor the protest. Increased security measures are resulting in localized disruptions in the surrounding area. Isolated clashes have continued between activists and police since Jan. 8; further clashes are likely, particularly when police attempt to forcibly disperse activists.

Advice

Avoid the Lutzerath area until the situation stabilizes. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the vicinity of the village and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
