Panama: Unionized pilots of Copa Airlines announce plans to strike nationwide from Feb. 2
Unionized pilots of Copa Airlines announce plans to strike in Panama from Feb. 2.
Event
Unionized pilots employed by Copa Airlines (CM) have announced plans to stage a nationwide strike from 07:30 Feb. 2. The Panamanian Commercial Aviators Union (UNPAC) is demanding higher wages and better working conditions. The action follows months of negotiation talks with the airline. Unless averted, the walkout will likely disrupt Copa Airlines' flight operations in the country; flights via Panama City's Tocumen International Airport (PTY) will likely be the most affected as it is a hub for CM flights. Around 1,200 pilots are expected to participate. The duration of the strike remains unclear.
Flight disruptions are likely during the strike and after it, as affected carriers reposition aircraft and/or work through any passenger backlogs. Striking workers may demonstrate at the airports or CM office buildings.
Advice
Confirm flight status and reservations during the labor action period. Do not check out of accommodations or leave for the airport until onward travel is confirmed.
