India: Unionized bank workers plan to strike nationwide, Jan. 30-31

Unionized bank workers plan to strike across India, Jan. 30-31. Protests and localized transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine public bank unions, plans to stage a nationwide strike, Jan. 30-31. The UFBU is demanding better working conditions, including changes in pension policies and a five-day working week. Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely cause limited bank service disruptions, including ATMs; residual banking disruptions are possible Feb. 1. Organizers may call off the strike at short notice if negotiations with officials progress successfully; the UFBU called off a similar action in June 2022.

While the organizers have not announced any demonstrations, related protests are possible, especially in the vicinity of public banks, government buildings, and public squares during the labor action. The largest gatherings are likely in major cities and towns; protests typically draw dozens of people. Bank closures cannot be ruled out if the walkout is well-observed. Authorities could monitor any gatherings that materialize and may intervene if demonstrations threaten to become disruptive. Increased security due to protests could prompt localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Plan for nationwide banking service disruptions and processing delays Jan. 30-31. Avoid any protests as a precaution. Monitor local news sources for updates on rallies and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations near gatherings. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
