South Africa: Doctors plan nationwide protests Jan. 26 to demand jobs

Unionized doctors in South Africa call for nationwide marches Jan. 26 to demand jobs. Heightened security and localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The South African Medical Association Trade Union (SAMATU) is calling for nationwide protests Jan. 26 to demand jobs for unemployed doctors. In Pretoria, supporters are being asked to gather at Heartfelt Arena at 10:00 before marching to the National Department of Health. Another march is scheduled in Pietermaritzburg from 11:00-13:30 from Langalibalele Street at UNISA to the office of the premier. Demonstrations may also be held in Eastern Cape Province, among other areas. Hundreds to thousands of people could participate in the marches.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are almost certain at protest sites. Associated road closures will likely prompt an increase in traffic congestion. While clashes are unlikely, they remain possible if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Exercise caution if traveling near the affected areas Jan. 26. Allow additional time to reach destinations or consider utilizing alternative routes. Heed the directives of local security officials.
