Guinea: Coalition of civil society groups postpones protest in Conakry to March 15 /update 2
Coalition of civil society group postpones protest in Conakry, Guinea, to March 15. Possible violence; avoid all protests.
Event
The Forces Vives de Guinee (FVG) civil society coalition has rescheduled its protest in Conakry to March 15 to denounce the ongoing transition period, demand the liberation of imprisoned FNDC members, and the immediate lifting of a ban on demonstrations. FVG leaders originally intended to protest on March 9, but following lobbying by religious authorities, they have announced in a communique that they would extend negotiations with the government for another week.
The protest route will likely remain unchanged, with participants gathering at the Tannerie Roundabout and marching to the People's Palace, via Yimbaya, Ahmed Sekou Toure International Airport (CKY), Gbessia Kondebougni, Bonfi carrier, Kenien, Madina, Donka, and Moussodougou. The exact time for the protest remains unclear; however, opposition protests tend to start at 09:00.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to prevent protests from taking place. Clashes with security forces are possible; given that protests are currently banned, police are likely to disperse demonstrators. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near demonstrations.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Keep away from any locations where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel deploying. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Plan accordingly for protest-related traffic disruptions.. Reconfirm all business appointments.
