Burkina Faso: Antiterror military operations likely to continue in North and East regions through at least late March

Counterinsurgent operations likely to continue in Burkina Faso's North and East regions through at least late March. Exercise caution.

Warning

Event

Burkina Faso's Security and Defense Forces (SDF) will likely continue conducting counterinsurgency operations in the nation's North and East regions through at least late March. As of March 9, the SDF's latest campaign, dubbed Operation Laabingol 3, has reportedly seen 11 Burkinabe soldiers killed and four wounded, in addition to over 100 militants killed. It remains unclear exactly when the government launched Laabingol 3, with military sources stating only that the new offensive began several days before March 9. Particular military actions have taken place in the East Region's Tapoa, Boulgou, and Koulpelogo Provinces. Several army units also remain deployed in Partiaga, Tapoa Province, following a Feb. 26 armed attack that killed at least 60 people.

The SDF will almost certainly maintain very tight security in the area of military operations. Local security measures could include movement restrictions, vehicle checks, bans on public gatherings, or curfews. Further armed clashes, including air strikes, are likely. Militant attacks against civilians and civilian facilities are possible.

Context

These operations underscore the increasing insecurity in Burkina Faso, primarily at the hands of the Al-Qaida-affiliated Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). Despite continued security operations, militant groups remain capable of frequent strikes against civilians and security forces.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of caution in the affected locations and heed authorities' instructions. Maintain a very low profile, restrict nighttime movements, vary routines, and move in guarded convoys. Minimize exposure to potential targets, including places of worship, security installations, markets, and other crowded locations. Carry proper identification and travel documents at all times. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
