Moldova: Opposition activists protest in central Chisinau March 13

Event

Opposition activists affiliated with the Shor party are protesting on Dacia Boulevard in Chisinau, March 13. The purpose of the gatherings is to protest against the cost of utility bills. There are reports of further gatherings in the towns of Balti, Edinet, and Orhei. It is unclear how many participants are at each location; however, based on previous related gatherings, participation will likely be in the hundreds. A protest in Chisinau on March 12 resulted in scuffles between police and activists, and over 50 people were arrested. Further protests are likely in the coming days.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to monitor the protest. The demonstrations and associated security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.

Context

Moldova has experienced political turbulence and civil unrest in recent weeks. In February, the government resigned in part due to its inability to control the economy, given the pressures of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine. There have also been suspicions of a Russian-backed coup attempt, and the possibility of staged false-flag operations in the breakaway region of Transnistria.
