South Korea: Activist group to continue demonstrations in Seoul through at least April 1

Activists to continue protesting in Seoul, South Korea, each Saturday through at least April 1. Localized transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the Candlelight Movement for Transition to Victory plan to demonstrate in Seoul through April 1 to demand several concessions, including the resignation of President Yoon Suk-yeol. The group has been holding regular demonstrations of varying types, including marches. Future protests are slated to take place every Saturday, with organizers announcing plans for gatherings outside City Hall Station at 16:00 March 18 and 17:00 March 25; these events may include marches to the Embassy of Japan.

Authorities have imposed a ban on public gatherings within 100 meters (100 yards) of a diplomatic mission as a precaution. Activists will likely move forward with the planned demonstrations despite the restriction. While previous rallies have remained largely peaceful, minor isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport disruptions are likely near the vicinity of such gatherings.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
