India: Response operations ongoing following avalanche in Sikkim State as of April 4

Rescue operations ongoing following avalanche in Sikkim State as of April 4. Fatalities reported; localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Response operations are ongoing after an avalanche occurred near the Nathula Pass in Sikkim State, close to the border with Yadong County in China, early April 4. The avalanche struck a tourist bus, trapping around 30 people. As of late April 4, authorities have reported at least six fatalities and eleven others have been injured; around 22 people have been rescued. Around 350 other people in 80 vehicles are also stranded in the area because of snow blocking the road.

Lingering transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the avalanche over the coming days due to the ongoing response operations. Disruptions are also likely at the Nathula border crossing. The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow thunderstorms and lightning warnings across Gangtok District April 4-5. Storms could hamper ongoing rescue operations and heavy downpours associated with the storms could trigger further landslides in the region by loosening the snowpack.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Follow all evacuation orders and official instructions. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Exercise caution when navigating avalanche-prone areas; seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area. Plan for increased congestion and delays due to road closures. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
