Warning

Event

Activists opposing the election of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha amid allegations of irregularities have called for another "Run Against Dictatorship" demonstration on Sunday, February 2, in Chiang Mai. Organizers did not immediately announce a meeting time or location. However, more than 13,000 people participated in the January 12 rally in Bangkok. Further rallies may be organized in major urban areas in Thailand over the coming weeks.

A heightened security presence along with localized transportation and business disruptions are anticipated near all demonstration sites. Counterdemonstrations are possible. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Chan-o-cha seized control of the country in 2014 after leading a military coup.

Individuals in Chiang Mai are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
