Somalia: Multiple attacks reported in Mogadishu February 1

Event

At least two people wee killed and several others wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Mogadishu on Saturday, February 1. The blast, which occurred in the Dharkenley district of the capital, reportedly targeted the convoy of a deputy district commissioner; the commissioner survived the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, though Al-Shabaab is highly suspected.

Additionally, reports indicate that two simultaneous blasts struck an African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) military convoy in the Heliwaa district of Mogadishu on Saturday. An unspecified number of casualties were reported. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in Mogadishu over the coming hours.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu.
