National Democratic Congress (NDC) to hold vigil in honor of former president in Ho (Volta) on November 19; anticipate associated disruptions

Warning

Event

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has planned a vigil in Ho (Volta region) on Thursday, November 19, to honor its founder and former president John Jerry Rawlings. The vigil has been organized at Jubilee Park from 18:00 (local time) and will likely be well attended. Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra following a short illness. President Akufo-Addo announced a seven-day national week of mourning following his death.

In a related gathering on Sunday, November 15, the NDC held a vigil at Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra from 17:00. Party dignitaries and some members of the Diplomatic Corp were amongst those who attended.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of the gatherings. Additional gatherings are possible elsewhere in Ghana in the coming days.

Advice

Those in Ho are advised to avoid the vicinity of the ceremony as a precaution, monitor developments, anticipate transportation and business disruptions near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
