According to local sources, four mortar rounds landed near the United Nations (UN) compound within Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) at around 19:12 (local time) on Wednesday, March 18. No casualties were immediately reported. The firing point has been reported in the adjacent Wadajir district. Al-Shabaab subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.
Flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations) are possible at MGQ over the coming hours along with a heightened security presence.
Context
Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu.
