Case Study — Organizational Risk 2023
Crisis24 Delivered Comprehensive and Seamless Medical Support, from Emergency Treatment in South Africa to Rehabilitation in Philippines
Multinational mining organization of over 20,000 employees based in Angola
Situational Analysis
A Philippine national with diabetes and hypertension suffered a suspected stroke at a company site in Angola. Although close to the capital, Luanda, the site was entirely isolated, and air evacuation wasn’t an option. Crisis24 received a call through our dedicated 24/7 global assistance hotline to provide medical assistance. We immediately reached out to our ready-to-deploy medical assistance network, formulated a plan, and put it into action.
Crisis24 in Action
First Steps to Ensure Medical Assessment
We arranged a ground ambulance to safely transfer the patient to the capital. The receiving hospital confirmed a stroke. Crisis24’s medical experts determined he would need care at a regional medical center of excellence and suggested Johannesburg, South Africa. Due to the high standard of health care available and its proximity to Angola, it made sense operationally as the quickest air ambulance option available. In South Africa, the patient had access to cardiologists, neurologists, orthopedics, and physios, all vital to his recovery.
Successful Transfer to a Regional Medical Center of Excellence
After the go-ahead was received, our team started arranging the transfer, which included guaranteeing admission and a bed-to-bed transfer. We also notified the insurance company and obtained authorization for the benefits as the reserve had reached the delegated threshold. When the patient arrived in Johannesburg, he was successfully admitted to ICU. However, his condition was deteriorating due to further issues beyond his stroke, and he needed to stay in the hospital for extensive additional care.
Results – Repatriation and Follow-up Care
After two weeks, the patient was discharged from the hospital without complications and returned to his home country under a medical escort. Crisis24 continued to support his follow-up care in the Filipino capital, Manila, including organizing and paying for treatment, transport to and from facilities, and ongoing medical advice. This continued for up to eight weeks until he could handle his daily needs. The case was then closed in agreement with his company.
