Singapore Country Report
Singapore is a small city-state in Southeast Asia with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. The city-state has continuously experienced political stability under the one-party rule of the People's Action Party (PAP) since its independence. However, there is a lack of a credible political alternative due to weak opposition, as well as a docile civil society structure resulting from the government's tight control of the public sphere.
Crime, conflict, and unrest do not pose a threat in Singapore. The nation is exposed to a latent terrorist threat due to the presence of transnational extremist groups in Southeast Asia and Singapore's status as a global financial hub with a large expatriate population. Nevertheless, authorities have implemented legislation and security measures that have been highly effective in preventing potential attacks. Singapore's reputation for neutrality and high-security standards led to its selection as the venue for a historic summit between the US and North Korean leaders in June 2018.
Singapore's location has spared it from powerful storm systems and earthquakes, although some low-lying parts of the island are susceptible to flooding during bouts of heavy rain. Healthcare standards are high, although outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases are common, notably during the monsoon seasons.
Security
There are no credible security threats to foreign and local nationals in Singapore. There is no armed conflict or dispute that may escalate into widespread violence, whilst levels of petty and violent crime are very low. Civil and labor unrest is also not a concern. The country has also not experienced any terror attack in recent years, although it is worth noting that plots targeting various landmarks on Singaporean soil have been discovered and thwarted.
Infrastructure
Air travel is safe and in compliance with international safety standards.
There is no concern over overland travel.
The ports are incredibly efficient.
Power supply, mobile phone coverage and internet connections are highly reliable throughout the city-state. Utilities are good.
There is a credible threat stemming from cybercrime.
Environment
Singapore's location puts it at low risk of major earthquakes or storm systems. However, bouts of torrential downpours can occur during the monsoon periods from mid-November to early March and June to September.
Health and Medical
Singapore has several diseases and health threats, including dengue. Vaccines before travel are recommended. Decent-quality private medical facilities can be found in major cities. Access to mental health services is limited. Tap water is considered safe for drinking.
Political
Singapore has a highly stable political regime, and there are no known credible threats to the existing leadership. Levels of corruption are also very low, whilst the rule of law is strictly observed.
