Uruguay Country Report

Country Risk Level

Low

Uruguay is one of the smallest and most economically developed countries in Latin America, boasting one of the region's highest per capita incomes. Culturally, it shares much with neighboring Argentina, but it has generally avoided the economic and political turbulence that has plagued its neighbor for decades. Currently, Uruguay's economy depends in large part on primary product exports but also relies on a small but robust service sector underpinned by a well-educated labor force.

The country is in general one of the lower risk destinations within Latin America, but opportunistic crime does exist, particularly in Montevideo and Punta del Este. Severe weather can also be a notable threat in terms of particularly violent thunderstorms which can occur throughout the country.
