Mexico: Women to strike nationwide March 9 /update 2

Feminist activists call for women to strike nationwide March 9; associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Feminist activists have called for women across Mexico to participate in a national strike on Monday, March 9, in protest of gender violence and femicide in the country. Public and private universities, opposing political parties, and several government officials have voiced their support for the strike.

Protests have occurred almost daily throughout Mexico since the brutal murders of a woman and girl in Mexico City earlier in February, and have occasionally involved violent clashes with police. On Sunday, February 23, hundreds of women broke into and set fire to a courthouse in Sonora state.

Commercial disruptions and associated demonstrations are possible during the strike.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
