Mexico: Plastic bag ban in Mexico City enters into effect in January

Ban on single-use plastic bags in Mexico City takes effect in January

As of Wednesday, January 1, the production and use of single-use plastic bags are banned in Mexico City for environmental reasons. The legislation also includes a ban on single-use plastic items such as straws, cups, and plates, as well as on biodegradable plastic bags.

The Impact Assessment and Environmental Regulation of the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) reports that around 13,000 tons of garbage are generated daily in Mexico City; of these 8,600 tons are sent to landfills and only 1,900 are recycled.

Individuals present in Mexico City are advised to comply with this new regulation.
