Event

At least one civilian was killed and one other was wounded in clashes between US coalition forces and government supporters near the town of Qamishli (Al-Hasakah province) on Wednesday, February 12. According to a US military spokesman, coalition forces had been conducting a patrol in the area when they encountered a checkpoint run by pro-Syrian government personnel. The patrol reportedly came under fire by unidentified individuals, forcing US forces to use live ammunition and smoke bombs in response. An investigation into the incident is underway.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.

Advice

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
