Italy: ATC workers to launch nationwide strike Feb. 19

Aviation workers to launch nationwide ATC strike, ground-handling strike at Milan Malpensa Airport Feb. 19; flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Air traffic control (ATC) staff employed by ENAV are planning to hold a nationwide strike 1200-1600 Feb. 19. In addition, ground-based personnel at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) are planning a 24-hour strike the same day.

The ATC strike could lead to nationwide flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations. However, it is unlikely to be crippling as Italian law mandates minimum levels of essential services during labor actions. Disruptions could begin several hours before the strike and extend for some hours after workers resume their duties as airlines reposition aircraft and reduce any passenger backlog. Longer wait times for security, check-in, and customs processing are likely at MXP during the strike.

Advice

Contact airlines to confirm flight status if booked to fly via Italian airports Feb. 19. Allow extra time for check-in and baggage clearance, particularly at MXP. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive at the airport early to prevent your seat being allocated to a standby passenger.
