India: Rideshare drivers to strike in Kerala December 7

Uber and Ola rideshare drivers to launch indefinite strike in Kerala state on December 7; transportation disruptions and associated protests possible



Drivers for the ridesharing apps Uber and Ola will launch an indefinite strike in Kerala state on Friday, December 7. The unions that represent the drivers announced the strike after talks broke down with the state government. Union leaders are demanding an increase in driver commissions and distance fares. According to the leader of the Kerala Online Drivers’ Union, Jackson Varghese, the family members of the drivers will also participate in the strike. Transportation disruptions, including increased demands for taxis, are possible in Kerala state, particularly in Kochi. Associated protests are also possible.


Individuals in Kerala state, particularly in Kochi, are advised to avoid any associated gatherings as a precaution and plan alternate means of transportation until the strike ends.
