Bolivia: 24-hour transportation strike in La Paz May 17

United Kingdom warns a 24-hour transportation strike is planned in La Paz on May 17; significant transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The United Kingdom has warned that a 24-hour transportation strike by private drivers - including taxi and "radiotaxi" drivers - is planned in La Paz on Wednesday, May 17. Many roads in the city will likely be blocked and access to and from Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP) could be impeded. Representatives of the drivers' union stated that certain vehicles, including ambulances, will be permitted to pass road blocks erected as part of the strike. The group also threatened to continue the strike and associated blockages for several days until their demands are met by the government. Municipal transportation services are expected to remain in service during the strike. Expect significant transportation disruptions.

Context

The drivers claim that the city authorities are issuing excessive fines for traffic infractions. They are also protesting the revocation of license registrations, without which the drivers cannot work.

Advice

Individuals in La Paz are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations, and allow additional time to travel.
