At least 300 people evacuated following eruption of Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) in southern Guatemala on May 5

Warning

Event

Guatemala's Volcàn de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) erupted on Friday, May 5, sending ash 2200 meters (7215 ft) into the air and prompting authorities to evacuate approximately 300 people from Panimache, a nearby village. Ten schools in Escuintla district were also suspended due to falling ash. No flight disruptions are currently expected, although this could change in the event of an intensification of volcanic activity.

Context

Fuego is one of Guatemala's three active volcanoes, along with Pacaya and Santiaguito. In February 2015, a major eruption at Fuego prompted the closure of Guatemala City's main airport.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation and to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Potentially impacted travelers are advised to confirm flight reservations.
