Libya: Fighting escalates in Benghazi May 8

LNA continues advances in Sabri and Suq Al-Hout areas of Benghazi on May 8

Warning

Event

Heavy fighting was reported in Benghazi on Monday, May 8, as the Libya National Army (LNA), led by eastern General Khalifa Haftar, advanced against the hard-line Islamist and Salafist Jihadist groups holed up in the Sabri and Suq Al-Hout neighborhoods. The LNA has gradually increased airstrikes and ground skirmishes in the areas since the end of April, with the latest advance beginning on May 4.

Context

Sabri and Suq Al-Hout are the last neighborhoods in the city controlled by the Islamist Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi (RSCB) and Salafist Jihadist Ansar al-Sharia (AAS). The assault is expected to be met by fierce resistance, and defensive measures – including improvised explosive devices, physical barriers, and damage to strategic access routes – will likely complicate the LNA’s advances on the area.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
