Moderate rains continue to affect Karachi as of June 30; further rain forecast across the country

As of Friday, June 30, moderate rainfall continues to affect Karachi, already suffering from over-saturation following two days of torrential rains and severe flooding. Local authorities announced that seven people were killed in rain-related incidents and electrocutions on June 28-29. Major infrastructural damages have been reported, such as widespread power outages. Road traffic and transportation disruptions are expected. Flash floods were also reported in Khuzdar.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts lower-intensity rainfall in Karachi on Friday, and continued thundershowers and gusty winds through the weekend in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Hazara divisions, lower Sindh (Hyderabad, Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar and Shaheed Benazirabad divisions), Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The summer rainy season, or southwest monsoon period, lasts from June through September. Flooding is a common occurrence during this period, often affecting thousands and resulting in a significant number of fatalities.
