Cambodia: Tropical Storm Sonca causes floods in central regions

Event

Tropical Storm Sonca brought heavy rain across Cambodia, which caused flooding in the provinces of Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Stung Treng, and Kampot since July 25. At least two people were killed in Preah Vihear and 250 families were evacuated from Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces. Over 550 houses were flood and forced their residents to flee in Kampot and Stung Treng provinces; at least 1000 persons are displaced.

Context

During the rainy season, which spans from June to October, floods are common in the northeastern and southeastern regions of the country.

Individuals in Cambodia are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g., potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
