Croatia: Wildfire near Split

Wildfires in Montenegro and Croatia continue to rage July 18; governmenment calls upon international community to help

Major wildfires continue to rage in the Lustica peninsula, located in the west of Montenegro, as of Tuesday, July 18, destroying several houses and offices and leading to at least a hundred of tourists being evacuated. According to local media, the fire, which started Monday, July 17,  has now spread to neighboring Croatia and is approaching the coastal town of Split, a city popular with tourists.

Strong winds and dry conditions continue to fuel the fires. The Interior Ministry has described the situation in Lustica as “critical” and has requested international help through the European Union disaster relief system.

Individuals are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas affected by the wildfires, to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and to keep abreast of the situation.
