Hong Kong: Heavy rains likely to prompt flooding July 17-18

Heavy rains likely to prompt flooding July 17-18

Warning

Event

At 15:15 (local time) on Monday, July 17, the Hong Kong Observatory issued an “amber” rainstorm warning for the territory. Heavy rain is expected to continue to fall over Hong Kong through Tuesday, July 18, exceeding 3 cm of precipitation (1.2 in) per hour. Flooding is forecast in low-lying areas and zones with poor drainage systems.

Transportation disruptions are possible; ferries linking Kowloon Bay and Hong Kong Island are likely to be the most impacted by this adverse weather.

Context

In late May 2017, the Kwai Tsing and Sham Shui Po districts were submerged under 10 cm (4 in) of water following heavy rain and thunderstorms. A runway was temporarily closed at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

Advice

Individuals present in Hong Kong are advised to keep abreast of weather reports and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through floodwater can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
