Event
Wildfires erupted in Bouches-du-Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes departments at approximately 15:00 (local time) on Wednesday, August 2, destroying over 75 hectares. Although contained in Bouches-du-Rhône, some 260 firefighters, assisted by three firefighting aircraft are still battling the flames in Alpes-Maritimes.
Meanwhile, Corsica is on high alert after new fires erupted on Wednesday, August 2, in the evening as well as early morning on Thursday, August 3. Although many have been contained, firefighters are still struggling to control a fire nearing the famous hiking trail, the GR20. Dry conditions, high temperatures, and rugged mountainous landscape are hampering firefighters’ efforts.
Advice
Individuals are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas affected by the wildfires, to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and to keep abreast of the situation.
