Costa Rica: Anti-corruption protest in San José Sep. 27
Protest at San José’s Plaza de la Justicia starting at 10:00 Sep. 27; avoid the immediate area as a precaution
Event
Several organizations and unions have called for a demonstration to take place in San José’s Plaza de la Justicia square between 10:00 and noon (local time) on Wednesday, September 27. The protest is being organized to denounce government corruption, specifically the so-called cementazo scandal. The protest will likely remain peaceful, but some low-level violence (scuffles, vandalism) cannot be ruled out.
Context
The cemetazo scandal came to light after investigations showed that the state-owned Banco de Costa Rica had issued an “irregular” USD 20 million loan to a local businessman to import cement from China.
Advice
Individuals in San José are advised to avoid this and other protests as a precaution.
