Costa Rica: Officials extend closure of Liberia International Airport until at least Nov. 16 due to runway repairs /update 1

Authorities extend closure of Liberia International Airport in Liberia, Costa Rica, through at least Nov. 16 to repair damaged runway.

Warning

Costa Rican civil aviation authorities have extended the closure of Liberia International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste, until at least 20:00 Nov. 16 to repair the facility's runway. As of Nov. 15, at least 36 flights have been canceled. Authorities have advised travelers to contact the airlines directly.

Flight delays and cancellations are possible on Nov. 17, even if the runway reopens, as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs and reposition aircraft.

Contact travel provider to reconfirm flight arrangements. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Once LIR reopens, arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing. Consider alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel.
