Costa Rica: Adverse weather forecast across much of the country through at least Dec. 4
Severe weather forecast across much of Costa Rica through at least Dec. 4. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Severe weather is forecast across most of Costa Rica through at least Dec. 4. As of Dec. 2, the National Meteorological Institute has issued a warning regarding a cold front influencing the country over the coming days. A progressive increase in rainfall is expected over northern and Caribbean regions through Dec. 4, as well as strong winds over central and northern regions. Some scattered showers are also likely along parts of the Pacific coast. The ground is already saturated in many mountainous parts of the country following previous heavy rainfall, and additional downpours could trigger additional flooding and landslides in affected areas. Strong winds may generate rough seas in coastal areas, as well as cause damage to roofs, electrical infrastructure, signs, and trees. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
Strong winds might pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports in the region. If strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, authorities may temporarily suspend port operations or close beach fronts.
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
